Welcome to Ubwino Wa Amayi

Ubwino Wa Amayi in Chichewa means ‘for the good of the women'.

It is a charity set up in Southern Malawi primarily to pay the school fees for 50 girls through four years of secondary school and to pay the fees for 25 girls to enable them to go to the Trade and Agricultural school in Namitembo.

Why?

By educating girls, there will be greater equality and not only women will benefit but also men, children, families, the community and the whole nation.

In Malawi female literacy is 62%, male literacy is 79% (MDHS 2004). Literacy gives women greater control over their lives. With literacy they are able to read health messages, decide how to use their earnings and are less likely to accept wife beating as a norm.

Staying at school can delay sexual debut and delay age of first pregnancy. This will make girls less susceptible to sexually transmitted infections such as HIV/AIDS and to the risks of early motherhood.

Only 24% of women in the 20-24 year old age group have attended secondary school of higher. Rural children are more likely to drop out of school than their urban counterparts.

This happens because of lack of money to pay school fees, lack of motivation, walking distances to school, lack of food, early marriage and childbirth and having to work in their home or the fields.

Whilst primary school is free, secondary school fees are not.
